“The Armour of Self” is a material embodiment of strength through vulnerability of the body. The sentimental value of doilies made by my great grandmother in Ithaca, evoke a strong emotional response when held close to the body. By creating crochet circles in the colours of the evil eye and combining with silk pleating, the material is draped off a strong Grecian armour to both protect the body, and allow the self to feel comfortable and safe. The process of making and wearing is act of emotional catharsis, becoming, and presence with the self, connecting to the women of my Greek heritage.
