Virtual DIY Power Suit
This project explores methods of deconstruction and joining techniques of an unwanted leather bag which has ultimately been re-appropriated into a costume garment. The piece is inspired by the intrinsic and transformative nature of costume design and the diverse roles in performance and identity. I was merely intrigued by the ability of costumes to change an individual’s perception of themselves and how they are perceived by others. I particularly admire the DIY aesthetic of PUNK youth culture, emerged in 1970s England, as I drew inspiration from their rebellious methods to destroy and re-configure into their own unique designs. Cosplay was also a subject I wasn’t too familiar with, however was fascinated by the virtual and imaginary universal worlds in which cosplayers recreate through costume and accessories.
