‘The Country Woman’ is a collection of mixed media textile designs drawing on traditional craft practises, generated through exploration and re discovery of once essential practices to create bold new works. Each artwork intends to highlight the importance of equality in recognition of the contribution that Women have made to country life.

The Country Woman, Mixed media collage

Taking inspiration from the book ‘The Australian Country Side in Pictures’ 1956, the project is centred around country women in Australia in the 1950’s.

Imagery from the book has been manipulated and incorporated into mixed media collage, in the process of creation of new artwork that explores the hardships country women endured along with their strengths and unique skills.

The black and white photographic imagery has been digitally enhanced and combined with pattern elements that have been created by hand with traditional craft and art making practices, such as embroidery, applique, painting & illustration. The two elements have then been combined with photography and digital manipulation to create a range of contemporary mixed media collage art.

The final project outcomes aim to showcase women doing hands on work, varied and essential tasks, recognising the strength in their hard work and importance in building our society.
